It was quite a busy night on Friday, Jamie Lidell was at the Cedar, Semisonic was at First Avenue, and Alice Peacock at the Fine Line Cafe. I ran into fellow W♥M Kate and Lara outside First Ave, who apparently said that they've seen Alice Peacock "a long, long time ago". I only recently found out that Peacock actually grew up in White Bear Lake, which should explain Minnesota popping up in many of her lyrics. I left them to see Dan Wilson, and walked to the Fine Line.

Matthew Griswold started the entertainment with his song, "Unbridled". He tells us that he normally has a full band, but replaced them with a harmonica (lower overheads, he explains). As a cover lover, I did spot his Cat Stevens cover of "Father and Son" (a song that Kennie wrote about).

Alice Peacock took the stage shortly after ten with two other musicians, noticably missing a drummer. She summed it up nicely, the show feels more like a big living room, full of friends and family. The emphasis is on family, as she proudly talks about her newly born baby.

The band followed the setlist pretty closely, with most of the songs performed were from her latest album, Love Remains. There were several solo Peacock performances, including one of "I Am Mary". The origin of this song was that it was based on a homeless woman named Mary who started a little fire to keep her feet warm, but accidentally burnt down a building, killing five children. I've quite a different perspective now on that song.

The only songs that weren't listed on the setlist was "All About Me", which was a fan's request. This was followed by the two songs for the encore, "Wrong Time" and "Fairborn". Fairborn got a bit of a cheer on the last stanza with:

So now I'll go back to Minnesota
Now I'll go where I gotta be
And the road I'm walking down
Goes on and on and on
And on and on in front of me

Funeral Party: Giant Song

Here are a couple of bands I'll probably be checking out in October. Please check out the event listing on the right-hand column, this shows you all the shows we're attending.

FUNERAL PARTY
Putting the 'fun' back in funeral, this "UK buzz band" is hitting the road in the US with Two Door Cinema Club and 30 Seconds to Mars.

To be honest, I'm not as hip as you'd think, I've never heard of this band... considering I try and keep an ear and eye out for the latest UK bands. I did try and check out what they sound like (although I'd pretty much made up my mind when I saw the 30 Seconds to Mars support). As I suspected, it's pretty much in the same vein: youthful energy and rock n roll. All good times.

Here's their sensitive side, their name comes from the Cure song.

ALICE PEACOCK
It's been a while since we heard from Alice Peacock, but seeing as she's coming to Minneapolis on October 8^th, I put on her last album, Love Remains for a second spin (I previously reviewed the album here).

Man, I forgot about that "I'd like to get stoned..." line that starts off the album. Also, really digging "Real Life" and "Fairborn", I'll bet she'll be doing that song live, simply because of the line "settled down in a Minnesota town, and the rest is history" and "now I'll go back to Minnesota", respectively! That'll get some cheers, I'm sure.

I have one final SXSW article to write (I know we're all sick of hearing about it!) and it's so massive that it will take the course of this whole week to put it together. In the meantime, I thought I'd take a break and review some albums that were recently released. The first is Alice Peacock!

Alice Peacock - I'll Start With Me

I previously briefly mentioned Peacock last year, and there was an overwhelming response to her song "I'll Start With Me". What is people were saying was that the song had great angelic vocals and melodies - and all that and more is on her latest album, Love Remains.

What I think you'll notice that the power of Peacock's songs are her voice and her crafty lyrics. Her lyrics, like most singer/songwriter, gives us a glimpse into her life. Songs like my second favorite song on the album, "Fairborn", and "City of Angels" reveals her traveling life (going to Boston, Minneapolis, Chicago, etc). I suspect this is more to do with her touring lifestyle, she seems to always be on the road. Plus, I think it helps that she was originally from White Bear Lake in Minnesota, but currently resides in Chicago, Illinois.

You will also notice that her songs are borderline country and acoustic pop. Although songs like the title-track "Love Remains" is quite simple in its lyrics, you'll find that it's incredibly catchy as you sing along to the chorus "only love remains".

While "Love Remains" is simple, she can also be complicated as well - in many of her songs, such as "Wrong Time". A song that I would hazard a guess that would best fit Peacock's personality... this is unlike her "All About Me" which I don't think is her at all. That song opens up with "I'd like to get stoned", followed by "do whatever feels good, with whomever I pleased", which is quite a shock as I get the impression that Alice Peacock is a good old fashion kind of girl. I mean she's probably a devoted Christian, based on songs such as "If I Could Talk to God" and the piano lullaby song "Angel".

My favorite song on the album is called "Forgiveness". I think mostly for the electric guitar and Peacock asking us: "Can music change the world?"

Does it come from the heart? Then, I think it can...

Mahjongg - Problems

I wanted to mention Mahjongg because they're about to go on what is described as an extended tour for their Kontpab tour starting January 22nd (see the rest of the tour dates somewhere in this article).

Reading their cryptic biography, Mahjongg rose from two bands: The Grid and The Sphere. I am guessing both bands are from Chicago, Illinois, where Mahjongg is from.

Since I don't actually have a review copy for Kontpab, I did download two of their songs to listen. They are both very experimental.

"Pontiac" (available on their myspace) is basically a drums/percussion song that doesn't change much, right until the middle of the song where other instruments are introduced into the song.

The other song is "Problems" (song available for download on AOL's Spinner). This song is, in my opinion, a little better than that first one (probably because there are lyrics and singing on this song). There's also a ton of interesting sounds and noises.

Mahjongg's nine-track album is called Kontpab and is being released by K Records on February 22nd.

Alice Peacock said she "just can't get enough of the road." It looks like she's been touring for a while, and just recently added the Midwest to the Northeast.

I checked out her website, www.alicepeacock.com, and it offers some tracks for download. I liked what I heard so I thought I'd pass on this information.

I haven't listened to the whole album, apart from a few songs. I was told specifically they wanted to use "Sometimes", which I'll include here. I couldn't find this song on the track listing on their latest album, Travel Light (2007)- but I suspect it's a bonus EP/bonus download.
